Alcatel-Lucent wins IRI’s Tech Tournament, a competition to determine the most significant innovation in recent history
ARLINGTON, VA (November 20, 2013) – Today, the Industrial Research Institute (IRI), an association that brings together companies and laboratories from around the world to seek, share, learn and create best practices in research & development and innovation, announced Alcatel-Lucent as the winner of its first-ever Tech Tournament for its development of the transistor. The competition invited IRI member companies to submit their product and service innovations, business innovations, innovations that created a new industry and innovations that enhance societal good for consideration in determining the most meaningful technological advancement from the past three-quarters of a century. The winner was announced at IRI’s 75th anniversary capstone event — the 2013 Future Summit — which envisioned the future of research and technology management through provocative presentations, speakers and research exploring how future trends, developments and events will impact the art and science of R&D management during the next 25 years.
Members were offered an opportunity to vote at several points throughout the Future Summit and narrowed the field down to four finalists, and finally, one winner. In addition to the winning innovation, which fell under the "Innovations that created a new industry" category, three finalists were announced in each remaining category and included:
• Product and Service Innovations: Crown Holdings – Orbit Closure
• Business Innovations: Corning – ClearCurve FIBER

The People's Choice Award was presented to Air Products for receiving the most public votes for their Hydrogen-SmartFuel technology, which was submitted in the "innovation that enhanced a societal good" category and garnered nearly 800 votes during the public voting period.
IRI’s Tech Tournament was designed as a fun and informative way for IRI member companies to showcase their technological capabilities while celebrating IRI’s 75th anniversary. For further details on the Tech Tournament and more information about IRI, please visit iri75.org.
