New members of IRI Board of Directors also named at Annual Meeting
Indian Wells, CA, May 10, 2012 –Dr. Ryan R. Dirkx, Vice President, Research and Development, Arkema Inc., was named chairman of the board of directors of the Industrial Research Institute (IRI) at their Annual Meeting in Indian Wells, CA. Dr. Dirkx is in the unique position of guiding the nation’s only cross-industry, cross-function R&D association as it prepares to enter its 75th anniversary in 2013.
“With our 75th anniversary, IRI is lucky to have such great leadership as we prepare for an exciting year,” noted Ed Bernstein, IRI president. “Ryan’s experience, enthusiasm, and ability to think strategically will no doubt make the coming year one that sets the pace for IRI’s bright future.”
In his professional capacity at Arkema Inc., headquartered in King of Prussia, PA, King of Prussia, PA, Dr. Dirkx is responsible for all of Arkema Inc.’s R&D activity in North America and handles coordination with the global R&D activities of the parent company, Arkema, headquartered in Colombes, France. Arkema Inc. has been a member of IRI since 1990; Dr. Dirkx has been an active IRI participant since 1998.
“Participation in IRI over the years has taught me more about the profession of R&D management and innovation than I could have possibly gained elsewhere,” said Dr. Dirkx, “I consider it a great honor to now lead this dynamic and innovative organization. For 74 years, IRI has blazed a trail for the field of innovation management. As we enter a milestone anniversary we’ll lay the foundation for the seventy-five years that follow. I’m proud to share in this endeavor with IRI member companies.”
Dr. Dirkx has developed his leadership skills by directing several global R&D organizations for Arkema businesses. His most recent projects were in the Performance Polymers and PMMA (Altuglas) divisions. He has also held business and marketing management positions within Arkema’s Specialty Chemicals division. He holds a number of patents and is a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). Dr. Dirkx earned a Ph.D. in Solid State Science from Pennsylvania State University and a B.S. in Ceramic Engineering from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University.
Dr. Dirkx is the acting Chairman of IRI as of May 9, 2012. Dr. Robert J. Kumpf, Chief Operating Officer, Plextronics, becomes IRI’s immediate Past Chairman. Dr. Martha J. Collins, Director, Global Technology Center, Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., becomes Chairman-Elect. Dr. Daniel A. Abramowicz, Executive Vice President, Technology and Regulatory Affairs, Crown Holdings, Inc., becomes Vice Chairman.
