Presentation in a Special Interest Session at the 2001 IRI Annual Meeting.
Objective: develop a technique to help align a company's technology portfolio and its business strategy.
Failure to achieve alignment between R&D's technology portfolio and the firm's business strategy can lead to failure in achieving corporate goals for sales and profits. Building on earlier work on this topic summarized under Integration of Technology Planning with Business Strategy, and utilizing input from many IRI representatives, a set of ten "Alignment Dimensions" was developed over a period of two years for use as a communications tool by the technical and business functions within a company. The "Alignment Dimensions," along with suggestions for implementing them in one's company to achieve maximum effectiveness, were presented in a Special Interest Session at the 2001 IRI Annual Meeting. The report on this work was issued to IRI member companies.
