Protecting the World and Building the Future: Implementing Successful Sustainability Practices

Virtual Breakout Session
Wednesday, June 8, 10:30am – 11:45am CT

The Tata group is a global conglomerate of 100+ operating companies spread across 10 industry sectors and known for its legacy of adopting socially inclusive and sustainable practices, long before ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) became popular in business parlance. It has been a hotbed of experiments and innovative practices pertaining to embedding sustainability within its businesses. The session objective is to showcase how businesses can be forces of good for creating both shareholder value and making the world a better place, with special focus on addressing climate change. Tata group has a rich tradition of social responsibility; 66% of the promoter company, Tata Sons, is held by Tata trusts. As a global and highly diversified group of companies with 800,000+ employees, The organization faces the complexity of addressing emerging ESG issues and climate change in each of the markets and sectors it operates in. This challenges its ability to be consistent in its approach to deal with material ESG issues while ensuring it goes beyond complying with local regulations.

The first part of the session will set the overarching context of the Tata group’s philosophy and approach to responsible growth. The approach will dwell upon policy, governance structure, key ESG thrust areas, measurement system and culture building – building blocks, key to any change management efforts. The panel discussion with 3 key Tata companies will give real world examples of how a culture of low carbon and sustainability can quickly become a source of competitive advantage, make our businesses resilient to future risks, and help us identify new business opportunities.
