RTM Call for Papers - Innovation in Manufacturing

Research-Technology Management Seeks Submissions

Innovation in Manufacturing

Research-Technology Management, the award-winning journal of the IRI (www.iriweb.org), seeks articles for a special issue on Innovation in Manufacturing.

The same technologies that are driving shifts in the way we think about, design, and market products—from the Internet of Things to artificial intelligence and automation—are enabling a wave of innovation in the way those products are actually made. “Smart factories” can respond to changing market demands while monitoring their own performance. Industrial equipment that communicates with users and with other machines, automated processes that require no human intervention, even real-time communication between the factory floor and the market, are all streamlining manufacturing processes and making possible new business models, such as mass customization. The result, according to some, is a new industrial revolution—this one powered by additive manufacturing, the Industrial Internet, cognitive computing, and ubiquitous connectivity.

These changes will inevitably affect how products are designed and how R&D engineers think about issues like manufacturability and design for manufacturing. RTM is seeking articles that explore innovation in manufacturing. Specific topics may include but are not restricted to:

  • Industry 4.0, as defined by the German working group, and its implications for innovation
  • The impact of additive manufacturing and other small-batch technologies on business models
  • The relationship between manufacturing innovations and product design
  • New business models enabled by emerging manufacturing technologies
  • Security and ethics issues presented by rising automation, increased data flows both within and outside the factory, and the application of artificial intelligence to manufacturing

RTM articles are original and practice centered, offering practical information, real-world case studies, tools and frameworks, and lessons readers can put to work immediately.

To be considered for the special issue, articles should be submitted by February 1, 2018, via RTM’s Editorial Manager system at www.editorialmanager.com/rtm/. Please select Special Issue Article as the article type and note the special issue title in the appropriate space.

About RTM

RTM is a journal focused on the practice of innovation. Since 1958, we have published peer- reviewed articles that map the cutting edge in R&D management, illustrate how management theory can be applied to real-world challenges, and give R&D managers the tools to promote innovation throughout their organizations. RTM articles are concise and practice centered. We prefer submissions at around 4,000–4,500 words, although we will occasionally publish truly groundbreaking pieces as long as 5,000 words.
