Accelerate an Open Community Movement
Jonathan Kuniholm, President, Open Prosthetics Project
How could we help the Open Prosthetics Project better encourage innovation in prosthetic arms or in orphan medical devices in general?
As we acknowledge the slow pace of innovation in technology actually available to prosthetic arm consumers, what might we do to quicken it? While media reports might lead you to believe solutions like thought-controlled bionics have already been found, or that 3D printing is a simple solution, real impact on patient care has not been significant and significantly lags the hype. The real problem is an economic one, and related to the medical device industry and the demographics of medical conditions. Come and discuss how industry might help through shared goals, or which low or no-cost government solutions might help create real change.
