IRI Presents P&G’s Dr. John J. Curro with Achievement Award

Research Fellow, Victor Mills Society, honored for developing transformational technology

Indian Wells, CA, May 10, 2012 – Last night the Industrial Research Institute (IRI) honored Dr. John J. Curro, Research Fellow, Victor Mills Society at Procter & Gamble, with its prestigious Achievement Award.

The IRI Achievement Award, established in 1973, recognizes outstanding accomplishments in individual creativity and innovation that broadly contributes to the development of industry and to the benefit of society. Dr. Curro was recognized for pioneering the means of transforming low-cost commodity materials to highly functional, unique materials, addressing many unmet consumer needs. He is also an inspiration to many future technologists through his teaching and mentoring.

During his acceptance speech at the IRI Annual Meeting, Dr. Curro stated, “Developing technologies to better serve consumers around the world has been my passion for almost 30 years. To be recognized for these innovations by the Industrial Research Institute is an unanticipated honor for which I am most humbly grateful.”

Dr. Curro has consistently delivered technology leadership at P&G for nearly three decades. “It is always a great privilege to honor innovators such as Dr. Curro whose work and dedication are an inspiration to all those here tonight,” said IRI’s president, Ed Bernstein. More than 400 innovation leaders from all segments of industry gathered for IRI’s Annual Meeting.

Dr. Curro is the lead inventor and developer of a technology known as Solid State Formation used in such products as Pampers™, Always™, Swiffer™, and Glad Force Flex™, among others.

Dr. Curro received his Bachelor Degree in physics from Xavier University in 1976. He earned a Ph.D. in Material Science from the University of Cincinnati in 1982 and joined P&G that same year as a Staff Scientist in the Engineering Development Division. He currently holds over 60 U.S. patents and helped develop two proprietary material platforms in porous materials and elastic composites.  In 1998, he was recognized as one of P&G’s most exceptional innovators with his appointment to the Victor Mills Society. In 2002, he was named a Distinguished Alumnus by the University of Cincinnati and was awarded the CTO Pathfinders Award at P&G in 2007.
