The innovation and business press is filled with the benefits of working with “open innovation.” The logic behind it is easily understandable and the articles either stress the massive benefits of open innovation or the impending disasters awaiting those who forego the opportunity. At Hoffman La Roche, we have adopted “open innovation” as critical component of our growth strategies
However, our experience in “open innovation” has uncovered cultural issues, organizational issues, funding issues, and leadership issues. Every day there are a hundred reasons why we should give up and go back to our traditional approaches/day jobs. But we don’t!
