Achieving Sustainable Innovation: Keep the Drive Alive - Research-on-Research Report Out
Carlos O. Garner, PhD, Senior Director, Global Regulatory Affairs, Eli Lilly and Company
Innovation is the life blood of all R&D driven organizations. These organizations must deliver new products, or cost saving processes, to consistently create new value for the company and customer. However, many organizations face challenges in sustaining the capabilities of continuously generating and developing innovation due to internal structural or cultural constraints. To facilitate organizations in achieving sustainable innovation, The Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences (KGI) and Eli Lilly and Company conducted research through IRI’s Research-on-Research (ROR) project platform. The collaboration provided the team with access to various companies in a wide range of industries. By interviewing recognized innovators, we explored the cultural, structural and behavioral elements that were conducive to past innovation projects across diverse industries.
Over the course of the project, 56 innovators were interviewed including 16 from the pharmaceutical industry, 14 from the agricultural biotech industry, 20 from the oil and gas industry and 6 from government research laboratories. The team worked with IDEO, a design and innovation consulting firm, to learn techniques for qualitative data collection and analysis.
