How will Virtual Experimentation and Simulation Impact R&D?

Increasingly, we model and simulate rather than build and test. We are becoming less dependent on a physical testing capability with expensive assets and technicians along with prototype shops to manufacture tooling and test parts. With modeling and simulation, the cycle time between experiment and result can be dramatically reduced. Despite industry differences in modeling and simulation applications, implications for management abound. What will be the knock on effects of increased speed to market and the ability to test much broader landscapes than can be afforded with empirical testing? How will virtual facilities be managed?
