RTM - Europe’s Quantum Flagship Sets Sail

The European Union’s €1 billion ($1.1 billion) Quantum Technologies Flagship has finally cast off; the first  projects, 20 in all, were awarded €132 million in October to launch the program’s three-year ramp-up phase. The 10-year project enters a global race to stake a claim in the quantum future, which holds the promise of delivering a whole new generation of computers designed to solve far more complex equations much faster than today’s most advanced systems. But some European scientists worry the EU may be spreading its research funding too broadly and may need to move even faster.
