I enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1980. When I graduated from college, I was commissioned as an infantry officer, and after Ranger school I ended up in the 82nd Airborne division at Fort Bragg. I had a variety of tactical assignments, culminating in battalion and brigade commander roles in Iraq in 2004 and again in 2009. After Iraq, I was made director of the Army’s Rapid Equipping Force (REF). The Army had set up the REF to ensure that new technologies got to battlefields quickly.
