Rita McGrath has studied innovation, competitive advantage, and how companies can best respond to rapid shifts in the competitive landscape. A major challenge for companies anticipating disruption is timing. Moving too soon can be wasteful, but moving too late can be fatal. McGrath believes that detecting inflection points—the points in time at which the victory of something new becomes inevitable—is vital, both in framing the threat and in creating the context for action. Identifying an inflection point can seem impossible, almost like seeing around corners. In this interview, McGrath discusses practical approaches she has developed for identifying inflection points and using them to prepare for the future.
