My grandparents fled China during the Cultural Revolution; they made it to Taiwan, where my dad was able to continue his education. He ultimately became a faculty member at MIT; he was recognized as one of the greatest theorists of our time in electromagnetic wave theory. As a result, I grew up in a well-to-do suburb of Boston, while my cousins in China grew up without nearly the same opportunities. From a young age, I had an awareness of how lucky I was.
