A cheap and widely available drug can help save the lives of patients seriously ill with coronavirus. The low-dose steroid treatment dexamethasone is a major breakthrough in the fight against the deadly virus, UK experts say. The drug is part of the world's biggest trial testing existing treatments to see if they also work for coronavirus.
The venture capital (VC) industry and the many angel groups that act like VC are a fascinating phenomenon. Since it’s official founding 74 years ago, it’s seen very little innovation. It still relies on good-ol-boy networks to find and evaluate startups and “gut feelings,” rather than data, serve as the primary drivers behind investment decisions.
Here’s a surprising fact: The death rate from Covid-19 has been 100 to 1,000 times higher in the U.S. and Europe than in parts of Asia and Africa. At the time of writing, Vietnam, with 95 million people and 1/20th of America’s per-capita income, has had zero Covid-19 deaths, even though it borders China and is economically intertwined with it. Death rates per million people in Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand, and African countries including Ethiopia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and Uganda are in the single digits; in Europe and the U.S., they are in the triple digits.
It’s fallen to CIOs to take the lead in directing businesses’ technology spend, giving them a far broader remit than they’d had previously. Before, CIOs had been tasked primarily with managing IT assets. Now, they play a leading role in determining how technology budgets are deployed, to maximize growth and return on investment.
Honeywell no longer sells its iconic home thermostats, but it's still in the business of making control systems for buildings and aircraft. That's put the 114-year-old conglomerate in a tough spot as workplaces have gone vacant and flights grounded in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Darius Adamczyk, who became CEO in 2017, spoke with The Associated Press about how the business is adjusting to the pandemic, diverting resources to build personal protective equipment and continuing a quest for a powerful quantum computer that works by trapping ions.
