The IRI Virtual i101 course is designed to provide an introduction to topics of managing corporate innovation. In it, the participants will learn both the essential tools for managing innovation and how to deal with organizational issues.

Part 2 of the course will explore the challenges of leading innovation as a new manager, including how to build support for your ideas, how to manage creative people, how to overcome organization resistance, and portfolio management. Both parts will feature practical illustrations based on the real-world experiences of the instructors. The course will present participants with a broader perspective on innovation and help them to apply this newly acquired knowledge quickly in order to create more value for their organizations. Note, that while the two parts of this course have some themes in common, neither is required for the other, and they can be taken independently.

Virtual i101 Part 2: Organizational Challenges in Managing Innovation will cover:

  • Common challenges in innovative environments
  • Techniques for problem-solving and innovative thinking
  • Case studies illustrating successful problem-solving approaches
  • Crafting persuasive narratives for innovative concepts
  • Strategies for presenting ideas effectively
  • Understanding the psychology of creative minds
  • Techniques for fostering a creative and collaborative atmosphere
  • Identifying sources of resistance within an organization
  • Implementing change management strategies
  • Prioritizing and managing multiple innovation projects
  • Evaluating and balancing risk within an innovation portfolio
  • Collaborative problem-solving activities
  • Role-playing scenarios addressing real-world innovation challenges

The session will include breakouts to work with the tools and techniques and build connections with the other participants.

This course is designed for both researchers who have recently assumed a team leadership role and for individual contributors who seek to lead an innovation team in the future. It is designed for those who want to broaden their knowledge of innovation management and to learn more about the practical aspects of key innovation topics and tools. It is also appropriate for an innovation team member who wants to develop a broader understanding of innovation practices. This course can be viewed as a springboard to the participant’s professional advancement.
