(Assist member companies in implementing TQM in R&D with case studies on management principles and tools)
ROR collected 52 case studies from member companies to learn about the scope of Total Quality Management (TQM) in R&D. The cases indicated that most experience was with TQM in supporting systems, services, and overall guiding strategies rather than in the R&D process itself. The cases also indicated the "quality tools" that were most useful. Results were presented in a Special Interest Session at the 1992 IRI Fall Meeting. A Quality Directors Network had been created earlier that year and carried on the work initiated by ROR, later changing its name to Process Effectiveness Network (PEN). PEN recently addressed Six Sigma in R&D with a panel discussion by R&D leaders with experience in Six Sigma. A paper summarizing the discussion was published in STET.
