R&D Organization and Funding

(Assess how corporate strategy and sources of funding influence the organization of the R&D function)

The subcommittee on this topic developed a questionnaire to determine how companies bring about a good match between R&D planning/budgeting practices and the company's strategic business objectives. Results demonstrated strong interest in further study, leading to a cooperative project with CIMS, supported by NSF.  The project later evolved into a more comprehensive project to collect input/output data on R&D over an extended period of time, described under item 19 below. Another project was initiated in 1994 to compile R&D organization charts from IRI member companies, and to include the ratios of funding for R&D from corporate, business-unit, and external sources.  A new survey of R&D organization and funding was undertaken by IRI in 2001.
