(Study of techniques to measure R&D productivity and how to improve it)
The Subcommittee on R&D Productivity was formed in 1982. A survey by the sub-committee of 63 IRI member companies concluded that substantial improvement was available for increasing both productivity and yield in R&D operations. Activities for improving R&D returns were also identified. Results of this work, carried out in cooperation with McKinsey & Company, were presented at the 1984 IRI Annual Meeting and published in RTM the next year. This milestone paper won the IRI Maurice Holland Award and the project provided 42 suggestions for thought and action on the contribution of technology to corporate profitability.
