Literature is rich with information on single portfolios, but is “lean” when describing management practices for managing a group of portfolios. This working group was formed to identify Best Practices for managing a “portfolio of portfolios” (PoP). One major rule, or "hypothesis," determined by the team for effective PoP management was to find Common Denominators among the portfolios. This means that portfolios should be transparent, sharing information, to provide easier comparisons among portfolios within the larger group. In addition, key areas of risk, benefits, costs, and timing should be characterized; metrics are important.
