This ongoing IRI PILOT Research project aims to identify best practices for how companies can effectively deploy ‘slack time’ initiatives to maximize opportunities for innovation. Slack time is generally understood to be time “during which employees choose what projects to work on and how to complete such projects” (Burkus & Oster, 2012, p. 49). Slack time goes by many names, including, but not limited to, discretionary time, dabble time, noncommissioned time (Burkus & Oster, 2012), and 10, 15, or 20% time.
