This article explores slack time practices and distinguishes between three popular slack time models: continuous (concentrated), structured discontinuous, and unstructured discontinuous. The author argues that each slack time model organizes time differently, stimulating a different type of creative work. They identify which slack time model can best produce the creative work an organization seeks in terms of innovativeness and complexity. This article also shares results from a pilot study, which offer insights regarding R&D companies’ preferred slack time model, the creative work employees perform during slack time, and the perceived success of slack time programs.
