In 2012, LanzaTech and PNNL forged a partnership to produce jet fuel from ethanol. PNNL brought catalysis technology and LanzaTech brought biotechnology. By marrying biotechnology and catalysis, the two teams were able to achieve something special. Their goal was to use the biotechnology to replace a challenging chemical step—namely, joining two C1 molecules efficiently—and then use catalysis to make a number of fuels and chemicals.
